MahaSaraswati Educational and Ecological Foundation (MEEF)
MahaSaraswati Educational and Ecological Foundation (MEEF) was founded in 1992. It is recognized by the Indian Government as a non-profit making, charitable foundation and serves as the sponsoring organization of the MEEF English Medium School, MEEF Vocational Training Program and MEEF Organic Agriculture Initiative.
All donations to MEEF are tax-deductible in India and are used 100% to support MEEF activities without deduction of any other administrative overhead.
Strengthening young girls is a special priority of MEEF which teachers give increased attention to. Educating children and opening them the door to independence and self-reliance will also cut down the migration of youngsters to the cities and keep them closer to their roots, their villages and their culture.
Since 2002 several generations of children have graduated from MEEF School. Small children have started teaching their illiterate parents to write. So MEEF has managed to be more than just an educational facility, it has become a communal center where children and parents gather to learn, celebrate their community and develop a perspective for their lives and their villages.
Today one can witness that the consciousness of the village people regarding education has improved immensely and MEEF is a support point not only for school children, but also for young people and farmers in the region.
MEEF was started with the belief that the important components of social change are the development of increased social and intellectual awareness, respect for nature and self-reliance.
MEEF aims to change the perspective of the people - from fear to freedom, from dependence to independence and from local to global. The goal is to transform the village and the surrounding region through the awareness of their own strengths and collective self help, to instil faith and confidence in themselves to change their environment bearing in mind the overall socioeconomic, cultural and spiritual needs.
The purpose of the foundation is to assist the people of Narsapur and surrounding villages by developing education, health care, sustainable economy as well as use of appropriate technology.
MEEF was initiated by Jyothi Reddy. She was born and raised in Narsapur and later educated in Hyderabad and England. Jyothi graduated with a diploma in social sciences and journalism and holds a Master in Environmental Studies. She has travelled widely in India and abroad, collecting ideas on sustainable development, organic agriculture and education models for Indian villages.
With constant effort, one-pointedness and immense willpower she overcame countless obstacles and realized her dream of an integrated approach to development uniting environmental, educational and economical aspects. Since 1992 she is the driving force of MEEF. She was able to gain the villagers’ trust and with the help of her team spread a strong sense of community far beyond the boundaries of the school.
In spite of the great success of MEEF, Jyothi still has big plans for the school and region. Her capability to fill teachers, families and helpers with motivation will remain a great asset to MEEF’s further prosperity.
